aHl realigns; new England clubs
battle in 7-team atlantic division
he American Hockey
League's board of governors announced its divisional alignment at the
conclusion of its annual
meeting last month at Hilton Head Island, S.C.
The seven-team Atlantic Division will
feature the four New England teams - the
Providence Bruins, Springfield Thunderbirds, Hartford Wolf Pack and Bridgeport
Sound Tigers - along with the Hershey
Bears, Lehigh Valley Phantoms and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
The 2017 Calder Cup playoffs will feature a divisional playoff format, leading
to conference finals and ultimately the Calder Cup Finals. The
division semifinals are bestof-five series; all subsequent
rounds are best-of-seven.
Teams will wear light jerseys at home until the Christmas break, and dark jerseys at
home after the Christmas break.
dean promoted at Providence
Boston Bruins general manager Don
Sweeney announced last month that
the Bruins have named Kevin Dean the
head coach of the Providence Bruins.
Dean recently completed his fifth season as an assistant coach of the P-Bruins
in 2015-16. During his tenure as an assistant coach in Providence, the team compiled a 207-128-45 overall record in 380
games, including winning seasons in all
five years and postseason berths in each
of the previous four seasons.
Dean also spent five seasons as a
coach in the New Jersey Devils organization, including four seasons as an
assistant coach for the Lowell Devils
(AHL) and one season as head coach of
the Trenton Devils (ECHL).
The 47-year-old native of Wisconsin
played collegiately at New Hampshire.
He competed in 331 NHL games with
Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta and New Jersey. In his playing career he compiled
seven goals and 48 assists for 55 points
with 138 penalty minutes.
bruce landon's 'way'
The city of Springfield, Mass., is honoring a man credited with saving AHL
hockey in the city with a downtown
street bearing his name.

Boston Bruins legend Ray Bourque
was sentenced to a year of probation
on July 6 after entering an "admission
to sufficient facts" plea to a charge of
Bourque also received a 45-day suspension of his driver's license and a
mandatory 180-day suspension for his
refusal to take a breathalyzer test at the
scene. He must also attend drug and alcohol education classes.
"I take full responsibility for
my actions and I will not seek
nor take any shortcuts," said
Bourque, a Boxford, Mass., resident, in a statement he released
following the sentencing. "I want
to apologize to the young people
that I bumped in the vehicle ahead of me.
I am thankful that no one was hurt.
"I have always lived my life dedicated to doing the best I can for myself and
those around me. I have always strived
for perfection but as we all know, my
actions a few weeks ago were far from
perfect. I know that I have let my family, friends, fans, the community and
myself down. I apologize to all of you."

Quinnipiac announced in late July
that coach Rand Pecknold (Bedford,
N.H.) has signed a contract extension
through the 2021 season. Pecknold was
recently named the Spencer Penrose
National Coach of the Year, as well as
the Tim Taylor ECAC Hockey Coach of
the Year. The Bobcats' coach, who will
enter his 23rd season at Quinnipiac,
has guided the team to four consecutive NCAA tournaments, highlighted
by trips to the Frozen Four and national
championship game in 2013 and '16. ...
(Conn.) co-op hockey team named longtime area coach Dale Wehmhoff its new
hockey coach last month. It's a return
engagement for Wehmhoff, who also
coached the program from 1987-89.
